After the initial battle atop the mine, Bureaucrat discovered an entrance to the mine. A long winding, poorly lit tunnel led down into the depths of the mine. This is where the enemy Longtom artillery and Mobile Headquarters fled into. They were down there, somewhere.
Sandman had operational command and radioed JOC to report in. Site captured, enemy units fled into the mine. JOC asked if his units were intact enough to pursue the enemy force. Sandman said they could, but would require some time for quick field repairs. JOC agreed and said they had 10 minutes, backup was on its way. The dropship Newt was in route with a reserve force of two mechs and a pair of tanks from the marine attachment. SOO had two such dropships, each capable of bringing a mere pair of mechs and a couple of support vehicles which included a pair of Alesian mech repair vehicles. The little dropships were largely laughed at, they were old, small, cramped, prone to mechanical issues, and carried such a small force as to be of little impact. However in this case, they would be a welcome site indeed.
As a group the lancers focused their field repair work on a couple of the salvageable mechs. Specifically much time was devoted by and Snipe in repairing minor damage to their own mechs, and doing what they could for the significant damage on the Kintaro. By the time the Dropship came screaming down from the stratosphere, the Kintaro was at least combat ready again. Sandman’s mech was badly damaged an could not be ready for further action so he would stand guard over captured spoils above and await the return of the recon Lance.
After the dropship landed two mechs rolled out, one was a Hunchback, the other a Whitworth. Sandman and Crow met the two Mechwarriors and made a decision. The Whitworth would be no use in the tunnels and thus was to stay on site with Sandman as a guard and then be redeployed for defense at Teutoburg Station. As for the Hunchback, an unorthodox choice was made. The pilot (call sign Rico) was comparatively inexperienced and new to the lancers. Crow wanted a veteran that was used to the Lance with them in these tunnels. So he ordered Rico and Deadeye to switch mechs, temporarily putting Rico in Deadeye’s badly damaged Blackjack and giving the group an outstanding veteran in a mech that was a close range specialist that would be invaluable for the battle ahead in the mine. Rico was clearly unhappy with this decision.
The lancers made their way into the depths, Deadeye leading the way in Rico’s Hunchback.
The group made their way down steep and winding tunnels to an opening below and then it was decision time. There were two paths, one left and one right. Does the group split up? Crow put an end to that discussion immediately, growling that they stick together and go right.
Plodding through the maze of dark tunnels the Mechwarriors were amazed at the environment they were in. The metal in the tunnels made their sensors almost useless. They had to rely on their eyes and the low light projections in their HUD’s to see. All but short range sensors were completely blocks and coms were a struggle as the metallic dust and ore in the mine played hell with everything.
Not long after they made their way across a long tunnel that kept winding back on itself, the enemy showed their face. A pair of light mechs, a Commando and Javelin attacked their rear. As the two mechs battled Snipe and Ghost, Deadeye started driving the Hunchback from the front of the group to the back. The Javelin and Commando blasted Snipe’s Centurion with a flurry or SRM’s resulting in major leg damage. Ghost and Snipe returned the favor knocking the Commando backward, causing it to fall. It was then that Deadeye rushed into the view of the hapless Commando, his ferocious AC20 fired and connected right into the cockpit of the small mech, obliterating the head and the pilot too. Nothing was left but a hulk of a mech with smoke and twisted metal where the head and cockpit used to be.
With his Commando wingman wasted, and a pissed off Hunchback in his face, the Javelin wisely cut bait and fled. Deadeye and Ghost chased briefly and then turned around and headed back to the front. Trouble was up ahead.
Out of nowhere a pair of speedy hovercraft whipped around a corner and were suddenly at point blank range with Crow, Sphinx, Snipe and Bureaucrat. Everyone paused at this unexpected intrusion, but Crow did not. He fired all barrels, turning both vehicles into a flaming inferno of twisted metal before anyone could react. The vehicles were strange. Nobody’s computer was able to identify these units as anything specific. It was something they hadn’t seen before. They sort of looked like combat vehicles. Regardless, this wasn’t the time for second guessing.
Crow, Sphinx and Bureaucrat had made their way into a large room only to discover two dangerous Urbanmechs standing guard. One was the AC10 version, who by himself was not too much of a threat but as they made their way forward to engage they were ambushed by a deadly AC20 variant hidden in a side corridor. A dangerous shootout had begun.
Deadeye raced forward to help out as Ghost and Snipe brought up the rear. As soon as the Hunchback was gone, the Javelin darted in and attacked Ghost at the rear of column. Then raced away after a brief exchange of fire.
The Hunchback, Kintaro, Hatchetman and Centurion all combined to make quick work of the Urbanmechs in ambush. The AC20 variant scored a hit on the Hunchback’s leg, tearing up armor badly. Once finished with those mechs, the lancers continued their crawl. But first the Hunchback needed an immediate field repair to patch up a crack in his leg armor, which took several long minutes that seemed to stretch on forever. After this was done, the Kintaro made his way down a North tunnel and found himself face to face with an Ontos tank. A furious exchange of fire took place with the Kintaro getting the worst of it by far, the Ontos was in an extremely advantageous position for its eight medium lasers, which devastated the Kintaro. The Kintaro backtracked, stumbling back into the tunnel as Snipe rushed past in his Centurion. Sphinx shouted a warning but Snipe kept right on charging ahead. Just as he went into the room with the Ontos, it’s guns swinging toward him, Snipe dove his mech head first into the depth one water, denying the Ontos driver any shots. Nobody could have seen this move coming. The Centurion began to crawl closer and closer to the Ontos as the other lancers mechs began to circle around behind it. The Ontos driver was now in a difficult position. Instead thrashing mechs in front of him as they emerged from a tunnel, he had a mech slowly crawling toward him where he couldn’t shoot it and several others circling around behind him. After a moment of hesitation, he backed up to the far wall, keeping all of the mechs in front of him. Then all of the SOO mechs came charging out of the back entrance at the same time that Snipe’s Centurion burst from the water, AC blazing. The Ontos fired back in a fury but his shots were panicky and even his substancial ML firepower was not enough to thwart the combined SOO attack. One of the many Lancer’s shots hit his LRM ammo and his tank exploded into a million fragments. There was no ejection system on his tank.
After the end of the Ontos, the lancers turned North again. As they began to move forward again, the Javelin attacked the rear of the column again, hitting Ghosts Falcon with another salvo of SRMs. Ghost’s mech was a solid match for the Javelin in open space, but in the confines of the tunnels which restricted movement, the advantage was with the Javelin whose shots were taking a toll. Crow ordered Deadeye’s Hunchback to take the place of Ghost’s battered Falcon as a rear guard, with the expectation that the Javelin would not be stupid enough to tango with him and his deadly AC20.
The group continued forward into a mottled catacomb of of carved out rock. Crow and Sphinx suddenly stumbled upon a group of four men carrying large equipment. They were almost shot, as all of the lancers were on edge and trigger happy. However after a split second’s hesitation they realized these men did not appear to be soldiers.
“Hands up!” Crow barked over his outside com. The men dropped their gear and raised their hands. After some discussion the men identified themselves as Alesian miners and they warned the lancers that the BDA had a three mechs in a large cavern up ahead and that one was a really big mech. They also said there were other BDA mechs running around and that there were a couple of Alesian hovercraft that were used for tunnel digging that were roaming around. The lancers all cringed at that, knowing those allies died under friendly fire only a few minutes before.
Crow instructed the men to make their way to the surface for their own safety, where Sandman and Rico were standing guard. The men were reluctant to go because their families were still in the large cavern in living quarters there. They asked Crow and the lancers to keep them safe.
At that the lancers continued on, hesitantly. The idea of a large mech, possibly an assault, up ahead was intimidating, especially since they had already taken a beating in this mine. The knowledge that they’d just gunned down some Alesian miners earlier in the mine also weighed heavily on their thoughts.
The lancers continued to scout out the terrain, with Deadeye and Ghost keeping an eye to the rear for the Javelin who was lurking back there, occasionally popping up on the edge of their scopes. Eventually they scored a hit disabling one of the Javelin’s SRM’s, halving his firepower. This crippled his combat effectiveness causing him to back off again, the lancers hoped his disappearance would be permanent as he had become a serious pain.
It eventually became clear that up ahead there were two entrances to a massive cavern, which was lit with artificial lights. The group stayed well back from the openings, for fear that their engine signatures would alert whatever enemy lurked within.
Crow organized the group into two sections and laid out a basic attack plan. They would rush in, stay in their sections and attack with the two sections shielding each other’s flanks. Without knowing the layout of the cavern or the enemy positions and units, that’s all that could be done. Once everyone was in position, the attack immediately followed.
Leading the charge through the door was the Falcon, who raced into the room at his highest speed, breaking immediately off to one side away from the unit signatures that popped up on his HUD. Immediately following him were the Hunchback and Enforcer, the two mechs with the best armor situation. They were trailed by the remaining units, who immediately followed, breaking right to use the cover of a hill to separate themselves from the enemy force while they assessed the situation and the enemy unit data rolling across their HUD’s.
They were in a monstrous underground cavern with artificial lighting and narrow streams running through it. To the North, a huge BDA Battlemaster stood, turning toward the Lancers. Behind him sat a Long Tom artillery wagon and a BDA mobile HQ, the same ones who fled down into these tunnels just hours before. Also just in front of the Battlemaster was an enemy Hatchetman, a standard model with a dangerous AC10. In the East was another large hill and a standard Jenner light mech, lightly armored but a dangerous combination of speed and firepower. To the West was another large hill and some housing facilities, decorative four story apartments for the mine staff and their families. Some civilians and civilian vehicles were scattered about that area. The North wall housed a huge lift system with twin elevators that appeared to be used for carrying material to and from the surface. Two mining vehicles were busy at work grinding ore out of the walls on the North end, oblivious of the entrance of the lancers.
The Hatchetman mechs went after each other almost immediately, the BDA Hatchetman firing his AC10 at Crow from long range, while Crow rushed to close the distance so he could bring his short range weapons to bear. The Jenner circled around to the West side, his speed and firepower wholly outclassing Ghost’s badly damaged Falcon, forcing her into a defensive posture. The Battlemaster stalked forward seeking out targets for his dangerous PPC while the rest of the lancers shielded themselves from his fire by staying close to the nearby hill.
At this point the lancers, without a word, adjusted tactics and split their force. The Centurion and Kintaro moved Westward to help the embattled Falcon. The Hunchback and Enforcer continued to plod forward, toward the Battlemaster, using the hill as cover. This forced the Battlemaster to back off a few steps to avoid the Hunchback’s deadly AC20. The BDA Hatcheman was battling more than he could handle. He made the mistake of eagerly charging in to fight Crow’s Hatchetman, forgetting for a moment that Crow’s Hatchetman was one of the few mechs better suited to point blank combat than his own. The BDA mechwarrior immediately regretted the move, but Crow refused to let him disengage, using his speed advantage to keep him close. Both mechs were jumping around, blasting away with their weapons while wailing on each other with their hatchets, an chaotic physical fight! The Jenner continued to circle the Lancers, blasting Ghost’s Falcon several times with his medium lasers. Ghost fired back doggedly, scoring a couple of light hits with her SRM4’s. Snipe then scored a couple of hits with his Centurion’s medium lasers, forcing the Jenner to back off a bit.
The Hunchback, Enforcer and Kintaro kept pushing toward the Battlemaster using the terrain to keep cover from his PPC. The BDA Hatchetman was clearly in a losing fight, outclassed by Crows Hatchetman and unable to break away. Both mechs were dishing out lots of damage, but Crow’s mech was better at point blank range and his added speed put the BDA Hatchetman at a crucial disadvantage. He couldn’t go toe to toe but also couldn’t escape. The two were wearing each other down quickly.
The enemy Mobile HQ got into the fight, rolling forward and firing at Crow with its Medium Laser. However it’s move to the fight seemed to have two purposes, and one of those seemed to be to try and escape of the battle went badly.
Meanwhile the enemy Jenner continued to tie up Snipe and Ghost, screaming around them at high speed and threatening with its dangerous array of weapons. They doggedly fought on, fending off the Jenner’s attacks. At the same time, Bureaucrat’s Enforcer led a sudden charge at the Battlemaster followed by Deadeye and Sphinx in the Hunchback and Kintaro. The Battlemaster unloaded on the Enforcer, absolutely punishing him for the bold move blasting him with all six medium lasers, his SRM6 and PPC. The Enforcer fired back at the same time to far less effect, getting knocked to the turf by the repeated blows which devastated his mech while his own shots had minimal impact. However his bold move paid off anyway. While the Battlemaster, focused all guns on Bureaucrat’s charging Enforcer, Sphinx and Deadeye took advantage, following the Enforcer with the Kintaro and Hunchback, lighting up the Battlemaster as he and Bureaucrat exchanged fire. The resulting barrage from the Hunchback battered the Battlemaster’s substantial armor, causing him to stagger, followed up by an enormous flurry of furious SRMs from the Kintaro which all seemed to hit all at once, doing significant damage to the Battlemaster’s armor in a couple of places. As it turns out, one missile was enough, as one of the many SRMs streaked through a small gap and detonated inside the Battlemaster’s torso, igniting ammo and causing a thunderous explosion as the massive Battlemaster blew apart.
With the loss of the Battlemaster, the Hatchetman went from fighting hard to win the battle, to fighting hard to escape. He made a couple of dangerous moves to try to escape, getting close to the exit. But Crow just wouldn’t let him get away, finally finishing off the slower version of his own mech when one of his many SRM hits struck ammo. Luckily for Crow, who was closed for physical combat, the enemy Hatcetman was low on ammo, and the resulting explosion merely gutted his mech’s internals and resulted in very little collateral damage. The enemy pilot ejected and was taken prisoner.
The fight was not quite over, with the Jenner and the Mobile HQ both trying to also make their escape. The HQ was disabled and captured largely intact, marking the only time the lancers had managed to capture one relatively in one piece. The Jenner however easily escaped, it’s speed simply too much for the pursuing lancers slower mechs.
The BDA has a sizable infantry force in the compound, as usual led by ruthless commissar officers. They were held up in two of the building in the Alesian miners housing complex. They had a large number of hostages, made up of the miners and their families. The lancers, having secured BDA prisoners outside of the complex, moved closer warily. Crow got on the open channel and offered surrender to the BDA captain who was in charge. He refused surrender, requesting he and his men be given the BDA mechwarriors, be given vehicles and be allowed to leave. Crow refused. The BDA commissar then promptly dragged a young Alesian man out to an 8th floor balcony and shot him in the head, tossing his body over the ledge where it fell and then smacked the hard ground like a sack of garbage. Before his body even the ground, Crows weapons were blazing. Missile after laser after missile went blasting indiscriminately into the building taking out hostage and BDA trooper alike, until there was nothing left of the top two floors of the building except a smoking ruin and a few cowering hostages. No BDA troops remained. There was a long stunned silence after that, and the commissar in the other building quickly changed tone, giving up on other prior demands and asking only to be allowed to leave. Crow agreed and gave his me two trucks for transport. He followed them to the surface, linking up with Sandman and Rico, watching them leave. The BDA kept hostages close to them until they were well out of range of Crow’s weapons. They then kicked the hostages out of the truck and sped away. But after they got a good distance from the hostages, their vehicles were torn apart by explosions as Sandman’s LRMs crashed into them from afar. As their bodies burned in their vehicles, he muttered over unit coms; “Rotten bastards.” Not a man in the unit could disagree.
Down below, the rest of the lancers we’re dealing with various issues. Many of the Alesian miners were expressing gratitude at being freed, yet there was a large number of them who were also distraught and angry about Crow’s shooting up of the building. Clearly they felt that the BDA troops should have been let go so that their loved ones would still be alive. They seemed to blame Crow for the loss of life. Three BDA soldiers had been captured by the crowd having been hiding in a closet. Two had been killed by the time the SOO lancers intervened. The lone survivor was very young and kept loudly proclaiming to be Alesian. A large segment of the crowd wanted to kill him with the other prisoners, but some local police intervened and turned him over to Bureaucrat and Sphinx. The crowd was getting increasingly agitated as the lancers left the tunnels with BDA prisoners in tow.
MVP – Bureaucrat: Enforcer Battlemech (DougW)
Played a vital role in the destruction of the Ontos, but more importantly his charge of the Battlemaster, while resulting in his own near destruction, was vital because it opened the door for an all out charge of the Battlemaster, a mech nobody would have closed with voluntarily, except perhaps the Hunchback.
Nuked – Bureaucrat: Enforcer Battlemech (DougW)
Paid the price for his bold charge of the Battlemaster getting his mech blasted nearly to pieces. Bureaucrat was so dazed after that barrage, had to be ordered to stay down because he mech couldn’t stand.
Finish Him! – Sphinx: Kintaro Battlemech (BobH)
Took care of business after the Hunchback opened the door of the Battlemaster with an AC20 hit. Sphinx rolled up and hit the Battlemaster with about 400 short range missiles.
Chuck Norris – Crow: Hatchetman Battlemech (FredL)
Rendered the enemy Javelin combat ineffective after multiple critical hits. Went axe to axe with the enemy Hatchman, chasing him down for a kill.
Hard Core – Crow: Hatchetman Battlemech (FredL)
Wasted some civilians, and some hostage taking BDA troops, in order to not let the BDA troops escape with even more civilians.
Scuba Diver – Snipe: Centurion Battlemech (RichS)
Made a great move to avoid getting wasted by the Ontos. Snipe dove head first into depth one water with his battlemech and then swam toward the tank to close the distance, nullifying the ability of the Ontos to blast him to pieces first.
Head Shot – EagleEye: Hunchback Battlemech (TomK)
Smoked the BDA Commando Battlemech with an AC20 head shot of obliteration.
